GAMES, LEADERBOARDS, FORUMS

Gamification, well, where do I start?  A good place is Points, Badges and Leaderboards - or PBL's as we like to call them. It's possible to "gamify" almost any type of course.  Although, not every course would benefit from it.  Today's learner is very experienced with gaming and research shows that engagement increases when learners play games.  I have designed many games for various programs and courses.  Sometimes these are stand alone games, sometimes they are included in an arcade-environment.  And sometimes they are embedded into a course.    Games could have leaderboards hosted on your intranet site, or LMS and could include badges for points earned, or even allow you to acquire superhero costume parts.  There are many type of games and gamification can mean may things to many people.  Here is how I have been able to leverage gamification in eLearing courses.  Detecting Financial Crimes

Here is a Hangman-type game called Hanging with Co-Workers.  It was designed as a Hanging with Friends copy and included in the pipeline course arcade.  This game pulls from a random set of 25 (or more) words and works well to familiarize employees with important terms.  This also has a leaderboard and was the frequent topic of conversation after class.  You may access a full demo by clicking the image.

This "Scrollable Document Game" was developed to support an organizational change to a new critical multi-page form.  Learners were informed of the switch to the new form, provided "form tours" via the LMS and then encouraged to participate in company-wide eLearning games designed to familiarize the staff to the new form.  The form was 5 pages and the game object was to identify (click on) the area of the form that the question specifically asked for.  10 questions were presented at random and points was awarded based on a timer - 1 point for each second.  A leaderboard was easily accessible and it was fun to see employees frantically attempting to beat the high scores - all while actually becoming experts on the form content.
